Fundraiser Hosted By Former Councilman Creighton Focused On Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising Rebellion And L.I. Connection

Bob Creighton, Kate Browning, Father Sean GannJerry Creighton, Bob Creighton, Richard Macellaro, Kate Browning, Fr. SeanOn Friday, April 8th,  Bob Creighton, former Suffolk County Police Commissioner and former Smithtown Councilman along with Father Sean Gann, Pastor of Saint Joseph’s in Kings Park, hosted a fundraiser at Napper Tandy’s, Smithtown, in support of the S.C. Easter Uprising 1916 Memorial. The Suffolk County 1916 Irish Rising Monument will be located at the Suffolk County District Courthouse, in East Islip, NY. Dedication is scheduled for May 3, 2016.

Bob Creighton and Judge MullenThe Easter Rising Rebellion was a reaction to centuries of British rule of Ireland that was often brutal and dehumanizing. On April 24, 1916 a group of men representing many of the Irish Catholics of Ireland declared the formation of the Irish Republic. This declaration was followed by many confrontations between those favoring Irish rule and British troops. Eventually the uprising ended with thousands wounded and hundreds dead. Many of the Easter Rising leaders were executed by firing squad in Dublin’s Kilmainham Jail. The confrontations continued for decades until Ireland was granted self-rule.

Thomas ClarkeOne of the leaders of the Easter Rising Rebellion was Thomas Clarke a property owner in Mannorville, Suffolk County. Clarke was executed by the British army on May 3rd, 1916 at the age of 58 less than 10 days after the uprising began. The work of the Irish Republic continued for many years.
-

The idea for a memorial comes from Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning who brought together a coalition of Irish organizations and individuals determined to see that the idea of a memorial become a reality. Those ivolved see a strong connection between America’s history and the Irish fight for self rule. Suffolk County has a large population (almost 23 %) of people claiming Irish heritage.

Richard Macellaro and Suffolk County Comptroller John KennedyAccording to attendees the Bob Creighton/ Father Sean fundraiser was a great success.  Among the guests in attendance were Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Legislator Kate Browning, Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick, Smithtown Councilman Ed Wehrheim, Smithtown Clerk Vincent Puleo and Judge Mullen.

Smithtown Resident Jeb Ladouceur To Appear At S. Huntington Author Fair

JEB LADOUCEUR TO APPEAR AT S. HUNTINGTON AUTHOR FAIR

His book ‘The Ghostwriters’ probes the lives of Truman Capote & Harper Lee

Smithtown’s novelist, Jeb Ladouceur, will appear at the South Huntington Public Library’s Book Fair on Saturday, April 9th, from 1:00 until 3:00 PM. The prize-winning author of eleven spellbinders, will be speaking about and signing copies of his newest offering, ‘The Ghostwriters,’ a work of literary fiction that explores the bizarre relationship between the late Harper Lee (recognized writer of ‘TO KILL A MOOCKINGBIRD’) and Truman Capote (accredited author of the classic ‘IN COLD BLOOD’).

Smithtown writer, Jeb Ladouceur, is bringing his new novel,

‘The Ghostwriters’ to the South Huntington Library Author Fair

The terms ‘recognized’ and ‘accredited’ are frequently used by Ladouceur to define the famed writers because he is not convinced they are really the authors of the two widely renowned novels commonly attributed to them.

“I’ve long suspected something about these two artists,” says the 50-year Smithtown resident. “It’s seems to me that Lee and Capote are completely miscast as creators of their respective magnum opuses.”

Explaining his position, Ladouceur points out, “On the one hand … Harper’s ‘TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD,’ is essentially a tender story about coming of age in the Deep South, and it appears inconsistent with author Lee’s rowdy image and reputation as the impudent, cigarette-smoking, pre-teen smart aleck that we know her to have been.”

The local novelist goes on to state, “On the other hand … Truman’s acclaimed masterpiece, graphically titled, ‘IN COLD BLOOD,’ and so vicious in its descriptions of murder in a Kansas farmhouse, hardly seems the work of one so dainty, and delicately inclined by his very nature.”

Two of the best-selling novels in the history of literature.

“But who really authored which?” asks Ladouceur

But those differences aside, Jeb Ladouceur states that it was an even more telling phenomenon that solidified his suspicions in the summer of last year.

When the original manuscript of a ‘lost’ Harper Lee novel, ‘GO SET A WATCHMAN,’ exploded on the literary scene … destined to become the widest selling book of 2015 … Ladouceur finally found the touchstone needed to demonstrate conclusively that Harper Lee could not, in fact, have written both ‘Mockingbird’ and ‘Watchman’ … the quality of the works is miles apart … and by extension, two other conclusions suggested themselves.”

Ladouceur states unequivocally, “The first was that Lee’s childhood friend and lifelong associate, Truman Capote, was the superior writer most likely to have actually penned ‘Mockingbird’ … and the second deduction was that the tough, profane, fiercely scrappy Harper Lee probably returned the favor by writing ‘In Cold Blood,’ a novel much more her cup of tea than Capote’s.”

Nelle Harper Lee & Truman Capote, childhood friends and former neighbors. But could any two authors be less alike?

‘The Ghostwriters’ author is quick to acknowledge certain similarities between Lee and Capote, noting that they:

  • are basically the same age (though Truman died in 1984 at the age of 59)
  • were schoolmates and neighbors in Monroeville, Alabama (where both showed an interest in creative writing)
  • and both left their southern roots to become contemporary writers in New York City (Capote having achieved celebrity status well before his childhood tomboy friend, Harper).

But age, origin, and ultimate worldwide fame pretty much comprise the extent of the similarity between these two intriguing authors, says Ladouceur … “Although it must be said that both of them ultimately became unfortunate caricatures of themselves.”

After 50 years, is this really a

‘second’ Harper Lee bestseller?

Truman was not only openly gay … he was aggressively, flamboyantly, notoriously so … flaunting his lifestyle in a non-stop profusion of ‘in-your-face’ pseudo-feminine performances whenever and wherever he could arrange to parade them … primarily on network television.

Conversely, Harper Lee … once little Truman’s fierce, tough-as-nails protector in grade school, was to become a lifelong social recluse, refusing invitations to show her face in public. She even said that upon her demise, she wished to be buried before people knew she’d died.

In this regard no two artists could have been less alike. Truman craved the spotlight, while the Pulitzer-winning Harper ironically detested it. That is the strange paradox which lies at the heart of Ladouceur’s latest provocative novel.

At 330 pages, ‘THE GHOSTWRITERS’ is available online wherever books are sold. It will be specially priced at $18. at the April 9th South Huntington Library Book Fair (145 Pidgeon Hill Road), and thru April 30 on the local author’s website, jebsbooks.com

Schumer - Proposed Handgun That Looks Like iPhone "Imminent Threat"

SCHUMER: NEW HANDGUN THAT LOOKS LIKE AN iPHONE POSES SERIOUS THREAT TO POLICE,  KIDS & SAFETY; BEFORE SALES START IN MERE MONTHS, SENATOR URGES SWIFT FED INVESTIGATION TO STOP WEAPON FROM EVER HITTING SHELVES; UNDER FIREARMS ACT, LEGALITY IS DUBIOUS

Gun Designed To Be Exact Replica Of iPhone—But Cheaper—Will Be Available For Sale In Just Months; With 4,000 People Ready To Pull The Trigger On This Dangerous Purchase, Schumer Says Product Is Imminent Threat Feds Must Address

Senator Says iPhone Gun Could Already Be Illegal Under Federal Law; Urges ATF& DOJ ‎To Investigate Before Sales Take Off And Weapon Winds Up Causing Disaster

Schumer: With Sales Starting Soon, We Are Under The Gun To Stop This Dangerous ‘Saturday Night Special’

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today called on the bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to take swift action in preventing a new handgun— that looks exactly like an iPhone—from hitting store shelves. Schumer says the gun could already be illegal under the National Firearms Act, yet, the product is set to be available for sale in just a matter of months. When placed in a person’s pocket, the handgun looks almost identical to an iPhone case and, because it is essentially hidden, the handgun poses a serious (photos from idealconceal.com)threat if law enforcement is not able to tell whether a criminal is pulling out a gun or a phone. Schumer is urging the feds to investigate before sales take off and the weapon winds up in the wrong hands.

“The latest ‘great idea’ for a concealed gun should come with 9-1-1 on speed dial because this iPhone gun is a disaster waiting to happen,”said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “This iPhone-lookalike handgun poses a serious threat to law enforcement, kids and more. Imagine a scenario in which a police officer is not able to tell whether a violent criminal is pulling out a gun or an iPhone. The bottomline is: the feds must investigate this before sales take off and this weapon winds up in the wrong hands. That’s why I am urging the ATF and the Department of Justice to step in and investigate these handguns now – before they hit store shelves.”

The double barreled .380-calibre handgun, manufactured by “Ideal Conceal,” is expected to hit shelves in mid-2016 and cost $395. Schumer said the handgun costs even less than some phones. On its website, the company says: “Smartphones are EVERYWHERE, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment.”

Schumer pointed to two reasons this weapon may already be illegal.

1)      Schumer said that to be legal under the National Firearms Act, a gun must be registered with the ATF. Typically guns that can be concealed, guns that look like wallets, pens and knives, are illegal under the law. Therefore, Schumer said this handgun, which looks nearly identical to an iPhone, could also be considered illegal. Schumer is urging the ATF to make a swift determination.

2)      Schumer also said the gun may not meet the requirements of federal law as it relates to the undetectable statute. The undetectable statute says a weapon is illegal if, “… any major component of which, when subjected to inspection by the types of x-ray machines commonly used at airports, does not generate an image that accurately depicts the shape of the component.” Schumer says under x-ray, this weapon may not have the metal components necessary to flag concern. If this scenario were confirmed, the weapon would be illegal.

Schumer is urging the feds to investigate both possibilities and to do everything in their power to stop this handgun from being sold. Schumer said not only could this handgun violate federal law, but it could also result in dangerous consequences if a law enforcement agent or even a child mistakes the gun for an iPhone. Schumer said this product is a disaster waiting to happen and that the feds should investigate this dangerous product before it is responsible for a death or deaths.
