Due to the COVID pandemic, this was the third year that the contest was held virtually. One hundred and eighty-nine students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 submitted projects for the competition from elementary schools across Long Island. They were judged by elementary school teachers and Brookhaven Lab scientists and engineers.

Michaela Bruno, a fifth-grade student at the Northport Middle School, Northport-East Northport School District, won first place in her division for her project, Here Comes the Sun, which examined the best substances to block ultraviolet rays. By testing a variety of materials (including six solids and four liquids), she determined that aluminum foil and dark colors offer the best protection. This was a fitting topic for Michael as she would like to be an astronaut or engineer and she had heard that UV rays are dangerous to people, especially those in space.

“I congratulate all of the students and commend their teachers for participating in this annual science competition. Since taking office in 2015, I believe I have had winners from my district each year, and many of them have been young female students. I am very proud of Michaela and hopes she pursues her dream of becoming as astronaut,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.
