Obituary - Mary Wloch

WLOCH, Mary age 92 of Smithtown, NY died on July 23, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Frank M. Wloch. Cherished mother of Elizabeth Hrybenko and Tom Wloch.

This was written by a friend of Ms. Wloch.

A Remarkable Life:
During the period from 1976 through 1978 I lived in Chicago and had the pleasure of getting to know this remarkable woman. This was a rough time in my life and she extended many kindnesses to me. For this I am eternally grateful. I loved listening to her life stories. She experienced much horror and sadness at the hands of the Nazis but also did not let those atrocities define her or prevent her happiness. It is my hope that many will contribute memories so as to chronicle her life. She was too precious of a woman to be forgotten. I loved listening to her tell of times when her husband, Pastor Wloch, would be detained for questioning by the Communist Secret Police secondary to the suspicious nature of his work (ministry). Upon hearing that he had been taken in for questioning she would put on her coat and rush down to get him. She would intrude upon those questioning him as the mad housewife berating Pastor Wloch and all mankind for his inconsiderate delay in returning home as scheduled. For some reason it always worked. When she would tell me this story her whole face would light up – no doubt she recognized the immensity of the accomplishment. In the safety of her living room in America this story was quite humorous but it also speaks volumes of this woman’s love and courage.

She placed her life in danger every time she did this. I know she realized this danger because she also told me of hiding in crypts in the graveyard at another time when the Nazis had killed her family.

On a lighter note, she made the best Napoleons I have ever eaten – I had never heard of Napoleons until she made them for me.I buy a Napoleon every time I see them and think of Mrs. Wloch every time. Some that I buy are better than others but none can compare to the ones she made. I think they were made better by the fact that there was so much kindness incorporated into them and I needed that kindness more then than at any other time in my life.

The world is a better place because she was here. There will always be a warm memory in my heart for this woman.
