James Cress Florists Closing - Thanks For The Memories
The Store Is Currently Closed; if you have a PRE-PAID please knock. If you are an existing Event customer please call 631-807-2040. Thank you. James Cress Florists.”
And then a second note below the first – “We Are Retiring! Thank you for your business these 47 years. It’s been our pleasure to serve the people of Smithtown.”
These simple words end the presence of James Cress Florists in Smithtown. The closing seems to be a shock to everyone who hears about it.
A call to the posted number was answered with “Elegant Events”. The woman answering the phone didn’t give her name and said “Mr. Cress was not taking calls at this time.” The woman politely declined to answer any questions. She did, however, say that James Cress Florists in Port Jefferson was also closed.
For forty-seven years James Cress Florists has been a part of family celebrations and it will be missed. More than a florist it is part of the memories associated with past weddings, proms, anniversaries, births and deaths.
To the James Cress Family and its staff, thanks for the memories.

I wonder if this has anything to do with this.....?
thanks for the memories...ha! here's how james cress decided to handle my situation:
my fiancee and i booked with them in january for our july wedding. after a strong first appointment, gary made up samples and we signed a contract. with that signed contract, we left a $700 deposit on a credit card.
throughout the next few months, my fiancee decided she wanted to a shade of a color of a flower she originally picked out. she couldn't get anyone on the phone. it made us a little nervous, but eventually we got someone who apologized and said she would make the change on the contract and email it updated to us. it never came. this past friday (5/20), we received a call from one of gary's employees with the retirement line. obviously, we were upset and didn't understand, so we went down to find out the full story and, of course, get our deposit back.
when we got there, we were taken upstairs. gary was helping someone pick out an arrangement and refused to acknowledge our presence even after i asked to speak with him. we were also refunded our deposit via check made out to my fiancee, even though we put it on my credit card. needless to say, i went and immediately deposited the check, as we called around for a new florist, since our wedding is two months away. i check the bank account today and, sure enough, the check BOUNCED. but of course. what a class act!
the story ends well for my fiancee and i: we got a new florist whose work we actually prefer to james cress'. they also happen to be more affordable (and they're not gauging us on delivery charges. gary was charging us $200 to deliver the flowers a quarter of a mile up the road!). and at the end of the day, we're getting married. that's all that matters :) but i'm embarrassed for james cress. completely unprofessional. i won't shed a tear when they take that sign down from their corner store on main street.
